Good prices on a couple of items as advertised in its weekly flier may not be enough to draw me to a supermarket or drug store – unless I’m driving by. But if a market or drug store has a handful of items on sale and if the advertised prices are among the lowest in the area, I’ll plan on making a stop to shop. Again this week, I’ll be heading to Market Basket for some bargains.

Through Saturday (Nov. 14), Market Basket has Jif peanut butter in 17.3- to 18-ounce jars for $1.50, bananas for 39 cents a pound, 24-ounce loaves of store brand hearty breads, including oat nut and hearty nut, for $1.50, schrod haddock fillets for $5.99 a pound, Krakus Polish ham for $3.99 a pound, half-gallons of Florida’s Natural orange juice for $2.50, store brand 1-pound bags of frozen vegetables, including peas, corn, green beans and butternut squash, half-gallons of Langer’s 100% juice, value packs of Bartlett, Anjou and Bosc pears for 79 cents a pound, Florida navel oranges (12 in a bag) for $3.49, 23- to 25-ounce Uno’s cheese or pepperoni pizza for $3.34, Folger’s coffee in 22-6- to 34.5-ounce containers for $5.99 and gallons of Uni-Gard windshield washer fluid for $1.50.

Through Thursday (Nov. 12), Stop & Shop in Milford (and possibly Hudson) has boneless breast of chicken in 3-pound or larger packages for$1.79 a pound, Folger’s coffee in 22-6- to 34.5-ounce containers also for $5.99, and Brawny 8-roll packages or Quilted Northern 12 double-roll packages for $4.99 (limit 2).

Two markets share top-deal honors this week

And the winners among this week’s supermarket fliers are . . . Shaw’s and Market Basket. Frankly, it’s rare when a chain that seems to focus on a few specials (like Shaw’s, Stop & Shop or Hannaford) can top the deals at Market Basket, where the specials run from cover to cover of the flier. But this week Shaw’s has some good deals, too.

From today-Thursday (Aug. 23-29), all area Shaw’s have boneless center cut pork chops for $1.79 a pound, large cantaloupes for 99 cents, market brand butter for $1.66 a pound (limit 4), 5-pound bags of red potatoes for $1.99 (and there’s an extra $1 off if you use Printacoupon at Shaws.com). Also, 12-big rolls of Charmin Basic or Bounty Basic are $4.99 (plus an extra $1 off two from Printacoupon), Maxwell House coffee in 34.5-ounce containers is $5.77 (limit two, plus there’s a flier coupon for a free box of General Mills cereal). Finally, Tostitos salsa, dip or tortilla chips are $2.50 each but there’s a buy one salsa, get one free coupon in the flier, too.

From Sunday-Saturday (Aug. 23-29), Market Basket has 85% lean ground beef for $2.29 a pound (in any size package), schrod haddock fillets for $3.99 a pound, market brand rare roast beef for $3.99 a pound, Uno pizzas (cheese or pepperoni) are $3.33, live lobsters are $4.99 a pound, farm-raised salmon steaks are $5.59 a pound, Breyers yogurts in 6-ounce cups are 40 cents each, Sargento cheese shreds in 8-ounce bags are $2, California Bartlett or Bosc pears are 79 cents a pound and yellow cooking onions in 2-pound bags are 99 cents. Finally, oh Canada, 12-packs of Labatt Blue or Molson Canadian beer are $7.99.

From Sunday-Tuesday (Aug. 23-25), CVS has store brand 100-sheet composition books free after 99 cents back in Extra Bucks. From Sunday-Saturday, you’ll get $5 back in Extra Bucks if you spend $15 on Energizer batteries, including rechargeable AAAs or AAs. Also get $5 back in Extra Bucks if you spend $15 on Biore, Jergens, Curel skin care or John Frieda hair care (and look for manufacturer’s coupons in the Sunday paper). Finally, Carefree Ultra Protection pantiliners in 16-count packages are free after $3.79 back in Extra Bucks (limit four).

From Sunday-Saturday (Aug. 23-29), Walgreens has Angel Soft bath tissue 12 double rolls for $4.99, and Geisha chunk light tuna in water in 5-ounce cans is 59 cents (limit three) with the flier coupon. Chicken of the Sea pink salmon in 14.75-ounce cans is on a buy one at $3.49, get one free (limit four) with the flier coupon. Zyrtec allergy relief 30-tablet containers are $11.99 with $7 back in Register Rewards, and Dawn dish liquid in 10.3-ounce containers is 99 cents (limit three) with a flier coupon.

A quick glance through the new supermarket and drugstore fliers tells us that there are some bargains to be had this week.

From Sunday-Saturday (Aug. 16-22), Market Basket has boneless, skinless chicken breast for $1.99 a pound, bananas for 39 cents a pound, romaine lettuce for 69 cents each, Chef Boyardee canned pasta 80 cents each, Folgers ground coffee in 27.8- to 33.9-ounce containers for $5.99, broccoli crowns for 89 cents a pound, Dannon yogurt 6-ounce containers for 40 cents, Maruchan ramen noodles 12-packs for $2 and Scotties facial tissues 250-count boxes for $1.29.

From today-Thursday (Aug. 14-20), Shaw’s has Hood ice cream or yogurt in 48- to 56-ounce containers for $1.99 (limit 4) and frozen swordfish or tuna steaks for $6.99 a pound (and there’s an added savings if you use Printacoupon at Shaws.com).

From Sunday-Saturday (Aug. 16-22), Hannaford has Dannon yogurt 6-ounce containers for 40 cents and live lobsters for $4.99 a pound.

From today-Thursday (Aug. 14-20), Stop & Shop has Dannon yogurt 6-ounce containers for 40 cents, its peaches or nectarines for 99 cents a pound and value packs (3 pounds or more) of 80% lean ground beef for $1.99 a pound.

From Sunday-Tuesday (Aug. 16-18), CVS has four 12-packs of Pepsi products for $8 after $4 back in Extra Bucks, a set of Philips earhook headphones free after $6.99 in Extra Bucks as well as a number of free after Extra Bucks products including 150 sheets of filler paper, Paper Mate Write Bros. 10-packs of pens and mini-composition books/80 sheets. For the rest of the sales week (through Aug. 22), there are Pantene, Herbal Essences and Head & Shoulders shampoo and conditioner in 23.7- to 25.8-ounce containers for $3.99 after $2 back in Extra Bucks.
