The perfect combination for lashes and eyes

About a year ago, I wrote a post about finding the perfect mascara.
If your in need of a lash makeover, there is no lack of promises: longer lashes, thicker lashes, no smudging, etc.
Covergirl has taken an approach to brighten up your eye color. During that November 2008 post, I wrote that I wanted to try Exact Eyelights Eye-Brightening Mascara, which was a new product at the time. I did try it, but I’m a black mascara type of gal and these mascaras were more color than black since they are designed to offer the complementary color to your eye color.
The product did brighten my eyes, but I wanted more oomph for my lashes. Then I discovered Covergirl’s Lash Blast Luxe.
It’s the same concept but the mascara’s are more black than tinted making your eyes and eyelashes stand out a little bit more. And the Black Royale shade is perfect for the morning after a late night, since the blue makes the whites of your eyes brighter.

Cold weather buys a must for fashionistas in cooler climates

Colder weather means our wardrobe needs are changing for the year. Instead of shorts and linen, those of use in New England are dreaming of layers and wool. Here’s my cold weather wishlist with some much needed fall items.

Patterned tights and sleek leggings

Colder weather means more layers for warmth. Tights or leggings are must for skirts this time of year in New England. You can go the funky route, like these gray zigzag tights for $10.09.

Or try something more simple, like these from Voodoo for $31.82.

Add some shine to your leggings to spice up your wardrobe. These ones from Dreamgirl cost $40.42.

Anything plaid

This dress is an unconventional plaid in a flowy structure. Not what you envision when you think of plaid.
Or try a big-pattern plaid coat like this one from Katherine Barclay for $59.99.

A structured flannel

I regularly wore flannels in high school but rarely after, and I threw out all my old flannels with the end of the ’90s. But flannels have a new structured look and a flattering fit. It no longer looks like you stole your shirt from your dad’s/boyfriend’s/husband’s closet.

Try this shrunken style from American Eagle for $39.50.

Pair it with jeans for lounging around on the weekend or a miniskirt for a night out.

A sweater dress

This look can be tough to pull off. Since most sweater dresses are form-fitting the reveal every hidden flaw. Victoria’s Secret has a wide range of styles and fits to disguise your problem areas. Try this one with a wide mid-section band to make your waist look slimmer.

To hide a larger bottom, try a style that’s fitted on top with a fuller skirt like this one. This one also would work well to hide large thighs.

Diamonds get a fresh look at Nashua fashion show

What do you get when you mix diamonds, fashion and a swanky eatery? My guess is very happy women and a very lucky charity.

Scontsas jewelers has teamed up with Fresh to host From Denim to Diamonds, a fashion show to benefit Ovations for the Cure of Ovarian Cancer.

The show is Sunday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m. at Saffron Bistro, 80 Main St., Nashua.

Tickets are $50, giving attendees raffle entries and a chance to participate in a silent auction along with entry to the show. There will also be hors d’oeuvres from Saffron Bistro. Tickets can be purchased at Scontsas Fine Jewelry and Fresh of Nashua.

Online site offers handmade items from Nashua and beyond

The word handmade, when it comes to fashion, can conjure up images of dowdy, knitted sweaters from grandma that were shoved in the back of your closet only to surface when grandma came to visit.

But handmade has come a long way and can be a great way to add unique items and personal style to your wardrobe.

Etsy.com it doing its best to connect people who make these type of items and those who want to buy them.

Everything on the site is handmade. The items run the gamut, from furniture and pet wares to art to jewelry and clothing.

Ways to browse items on the site are endless. You can search by category or check out the showcase page where a seller selects his or her top item to be featured on the page. There is also a featured seller and recently listed items. Or get more detailed and search by color, treasure (items handpicked by members), pounce (shops waiting for a first sale or those who just sold an item), shop local (there are several sellers in Nashua), time machine 2 (which are just listed items) and editor’s picks.

So next time you want an original piece, head online for something handmade.

Wardrobe staples do double time with added accessories

If you’re a regular reader of The Telegraph, you probably read the story about two weeks ago about Valerie Elizabeth, a Dallas stylist that was wearing her LBD every day for a month.

Of course, a natural reaction is how can she pull that off? (And some also wondered if she was going to wash the dress.)

She did pull it off (and I’m sure she washed the dress at some point) with great results. Many of her looks are completely different.

Show off those news shoes at Stilettos event in Chelmsford, Mass.

It’s always exciting to buy a new pair of shoes, but sometimes, you can’t find the right place to show off your purchase.

In steps, literally, the Hello Stiletto Shoe Club. The club, which was founded in Boston in 2004, is free and holds events in several states across the country.

You can share your passion for shoes with others who know just how you feel.

The next event in this area is Thursday, Aug. 27, at Moonstones, 185 Chelmsford St., Chelmsford, Mass., from 6:30-9 p.m.

The event features a pink carpet walkoff with a prize for “Best-in-Shoe.”

There also will be complimentary appetizers and a cash bar.

The Stilletto club does ask that you sign-up for the club and RSVP before attending events. Both can be done through the Web site.

Party with a Purpose in Nashua to help fight cancer and violence

I always party with a purpose and so do the Mary Kay reps.

The reps will hold a Party with a Purpose on Sunday, Aug. 30, to benefit the Mary Kay Foundation, whose mission is to eliminate cancer and to end violence against women.

The event will be at the Power of Pink Training Center, 295 Main St., Nashua from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

For $10, you can spend the afternoon getting a free color makover, skin care consultations and get a $10 coupon for the purchase of any Mary Kay products.

There also will be snacks.

Advance registration is required and can be done by calling the director in your area: Joyce Young in Nashua at 883-9773 and Laurie Ware in Milford at 673-5152.

Help someone else dress for success through clothes donations

Sometimes being fashionable is about giving back.

This is exactly what the Salvation Army is counting on for the Dress for Success program.
The program, which was the subject of Stacy Milbouer’s column in Monday’s Telegraph, supplies those looking for a job with clothing suitable for interviews.
This is a great time to look through your closet and clear out any clothes you no longer wear to help out those who could really use them.
Clothes can be dropped off at the Salvation Army at 1 Montgomery St., Nashua, from 9 a.m. to noon through Aug. 15.

Nashua thrift shop sale an opportunity to update your wardrobe for next to nothing

I know many people have cut back on spending because of the lousy economy but that doesn’t mean you need to toss aside all clothes shopping and the Grey Nuns Thrift Shop is making it easy to add new pieces to your wardrobe at little cost.

The shop at 25 Marshall St., is holding a half-price sale on all summer clothing from Aug. 3 to Aug. 15. All summer apparel as well as shoes and special occasion dresses are included in the sale.

The shop is one of the few thrift shops in the areas to stay open in the summer and is worth a visit. Check out my previous post for more information on what they offer.

The shop is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

More fashion, more fun in Nashua and it’s all for a good cause

There’s been no shortage of fashion events in the area so far this year and this weekend is no exception.

On Saturday, July 11, Aidan James Salon and SKIN are offering up an evening with the girls filled with fashion, beauty tips, and of course, fun at the Sky Lounge in Nashua.

There will be martini sliders (mini martinis that are a take on the slider burger trend), makeovers,
a lash and brow bar, skin analysis, gift bags and raﬄes. The grand prize of the night is a year of
cuts, colors and a series of laser hair removal. Who wouldn’t want to win that?

There will also be a fashion show starting at 7 p.m. featuring couture collections from Boston-area designers.

The event, which will benefit Girls Inc. and The Humane Society for Greater Nashua, runs from 5-7:30 p.m. with a $25 donation requested at the door.
